There are two types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, which is diagnosed in children due to a lack of insulin, and type 2 diabetes, which is diagnosed in adults with obesity.

New treatments for diabetes with technology

Gestión spoke with Vicente Cruzate, director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable, Rare and Orphan Diseases of the Ministry of Health, to find out what measures they have adopted to protect patients with greater complications.

He commented that for type 1 diabetes, Minsa is in the process of acquiring an insulin pen. What is it referring to? This is a device used to give an injection of this medication to patients who have type 1 diabetes.

On the other hand, Cruzate also mentioned the Hearts initiative of the World Health Organization. This model has been proposed to be used to manage the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension and diabetes by 2025.

“It is interesting because we are going to ensure that all patients with diabetes have a diagnosis and have control with laboratory parameters. The objective is that this disease does not progress, that complications do not establish themselves and if they do happen, that they pass in the long term,” the specialist mentioned.

Among the points addressed by the Hearts initiative, according to the WHO, are:

The introduction of drivers of hypertension control. The development of a comprehensive and practical clinical pathway. The development of a strategy to improve the accuracy of blood pressure measurement. The creation of a monitoring and evaluation framework. The development of a standardized set of training and education resources

Innovation in Medication: new alternatives

For his part, Ricardo Losno, representative of the Association of Clinics in the non-communicable diseases committee of the National Health Council, informed Management about the new alternatives in medication that help diabetic people reduce the probability of contracting chronic diseases. .

“Incretin is a series of hormones that help insulin do its job. This secretes insulin by the pancreas and, with this, blood glucose levels after the meal decrease. “It works quite well,” says the expert.

It is necessary to emphasize that, if you have kidney problems, the dose of incretin should be adjusted under the observation of a doctor.

On the other hand, diabetic patients can also rely on sodium-glucose cotransporter inhibitors. What is your function? Ricardo Losno explains that thanks to this drug, renal glucose reabsorption is reduced and urinary elimination is increased, reducing sugar concentrations.

“There is a pill that absorbs sugar and causes it to be lost in the urine quickly, but the most interesting thing is that the sugar and salt disappear. There, the person with obesity can lose weight, lower blood pressure, protect the heart, improve the use of the heart’s energy, improve the kidney filter, among other benefits,” he said.

However, the price of these products would be a complication. Ricardo Losno explained that incretin treatment costs between S/50 and S/100 per month. Regarding cotransporter inhibitors, the price ranges between S/ 200 and S/ 250.

Population diagnosed with diabetes

Specialists conclude that, with the passage of time, diabetes is becoming a ‘common’ disease for citizens and that the age range is even incorporating young people and adolescents.

Vicente Cruzate, representative of the Minsa, mentions that in 2020, 4.5% of the population was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, in 2021 it was 4.9%; while currently it is 5.1%. “This disease has a greater prevalence on the coast, where it affects 6% of the population, while in the mountains it is 3%.”

Ricardo Losno mentioned that one in three people is overweight and that, when black spots appear on the neck or other extremities, it means that the person suffers from insulin resistance. “Then you have to lose weight. There are many cases of obesity and it is due to the type of food, carbohydrates, flour.”

“In the 80s, diabetic was almost a definition by age. Now, there are young preteens who already have signs of diabetes. At 10 or 11 years old they are obese. The boys are fatter and overweight. It is a parent’s task. We must guide the children who do not have a greater decision. The human brain craves sugar, but genetically we are not fit to handle it,” she concluded.
