DiDi Driver Arrested in Ana Karen Nute Feminicide: Mexico State Case

Metepec, Mexico – A DiDi driver, Daniel ‘N’, has been taken into custody and charged with the feminicide of 19-year-traditional Ana Karen Nute Téllez, authorities confirmed on Wednesday, March 5th. The case has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny of ride-sharing safety in the State of Mexico. Nute Téllez was reported missing after failing to return home on February 28th, and her body was discovered on Sunday, March 1st, in a rural area of San Miguel Totocuitlapilco, Metepec.

The investigation revealed that Daniel ‘N’ allegedly met Nute Téllez while working, despite using a motorcycle not registered with the DiDi platform. This detail, along with the circumstances surrounding her death, has raised concerns about the vetting process for drivers and the security measures in place for passengers utilizing the popular ride-hailing service. The case underscores the vulnerabilities faced by women using transportation apps and the urgent need for increased safety protocols.

According to the State of Mexico Attorney General’s Office, Daniel ‘N’ was under the influence of alcohol when he picked up Nute Téllez. Initial reports indicate he attempted to rob her, and when she resisted, he physically assaulted and ultimately strangled her. The forensic medical examiner determined the cause of death to be cerebral edema secondary to mechanical asphyxiation by strangulation, specifically antebrachial strangulation – using the forearm – El Financiero reported.

Nute Téllez, a pedagogy student at Univer Milenium in Toluca, had requested the DiDi Moto ride after visiting a location in San Antonio La Isla on February 28th. Her family reported her missing when she did not arrive home, initiating a search that culminated in the tragic discovery of her body. Investigators used surveillance footage to identify a blue motorcycle, without license plates, arriving at the location where Nute Téllez was last seen around 11:15 PM on February 28th. Edomex Ahora detailed the timeline of events.

DiDi Confirms Driver Registration, Unregistered Motorcycle

DiDi has confirmed that Daniel ‘N’ was a registered driver on their platform through their LERT (Lew Eforment Portal) system. Whereas, the company acknowledged that the motorcycle used during the fatal ride was not registered in their system. This discrepancy is a key focus of the ongoing investigation, raising questions about how drivers can operate outside of the platform’s established safety protocols. The company has not yet issued a comprehensive statement addressing the security lapse.

Authorities apprehended Daniel ‘N’ at his home in Calimaya, a municipality bordering San Antonio La Isla, and Metepec. During his arrest, he allegedly offered money to police officers in an attempt to secure his release, leading to a separate investigation into potential bribery charges, according to reports. A Fondo Edomex reported on the attempted bribe.

Potential Penalties and Upcoming Court Hearing

Daniel ‘N’ now faces a potential prison sentence of 40 to 70 years if convicted of feminicide, as stipulated by the penal code of the State of Mexico. The initial hearing, or audiencia de imputación, is scheduled to seize place in the courts of Almoloya de Juárez, where a judge will determine whether to proceed with formal charges. The outcome of this hearing will be a critical step in bringing justice for Ana Karen Nute Téllez and her family.

The case has ignited a public conversation about the safety of women using ride-sharing services and the responsibility of companies like DiDi to ensure the security of their passengers. Advocates are calling for stricter regulations, more thorough background checks for drivers, and improved tracking and emergency response systems. The focus now shifts to the legal proceedings and the potential for systemic changes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As the investigation continues and the legal process unfolds, the community awaits further details and a resolution that holds the perpetrator accountable and addresses the underlying issues that contributed to this devastating loss. Share your thoughts and reactions in the comments below.
