Die-Hard Gauls Blocking Development in Oud-Heverlee: The Fight for a Neighborhood Store

Do you know the die-hard Gauls? Well in the small town of Oud-Heverlee, near Louvain, there are two of them. Two to block the development of an entire neighborhood.

Indeed, as our colleagues from Nieuwsblad explain, the entire neighborhood has been waiting for 20 years for the arrival of a small auxiliary store, which could provide good services to many residents. It must be said that before, you could find a bakery, a butcher, a supermarket, cafes and there was even a Spar. But today, in the Dorpstraat, there is nothing left (except a KBC bank)

“We’ve been waiting for a new neighborhood store for more than 20 years,” explains Sarah, a local resident, to our colleagues. “Two years ago, the last baker went bankrupt and was replaced by an automatic bread distributor.” For small errands, residents must therefore go to a neighboring town.

In fact, everything is ready for an Okay to set up in this neighborhood made up mainly of elderly people, who would find it very useful to have a small store near their homes. All that’s missing is the agreement of a couple. According to our colleagues, he fears that the presence of an Okay in front of the house he rents to people will lower the value of his property.

Enough to provoke the anger of other residents: “If this store arrives one day and they go to shop there, they will have to deal with me,” says Nancy, 58 years old. “I don’t understand how they can block this… It would be a positive point for the municipality.”

In the meantime, an “Okay for Okay” petition has been signed by several thousand people and will be sent to the province. Since the competent public authorities have, so far, agreed with the two residents who do not want the store, residents hope that the province will be able to agree with them.
