The “Behind the Wheel” portal tested a new diesel engine and manual transmission for the UAZ “Patriot”
An expert from the publication “Behind the Wheel,” Alexander Vinogradov, tested a new power plant consisting of a diesel engine and a 6-speed manual transmission. In 2024, this engine and gearbox will be installed on the Russian UAZ Patriot SUV. It is known that the 2.0-liter engine with a capacity of 130 horsepower is supplied by the Chinese company JAC and will be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.
However, it is already possible to evaluate the performance of this power plant, since it is installed on the Sollers Argo truck (also known as JAC N25/N35), which is produced in Ulyanovsk. The UAZ Patriot has a curb weight of 2,125 kilograms, while the Sollers Argo industrial van, which was the subject of testing, weighs 2,500 kg.
“To be honest, I expected the car to be a little sluggish, but the van accelerates surprisingly well from 1,500 rpm. The nature of the engine on the truck is brisk, and fuel consumption is about 10 liters per 100 kilometers,” noted Alexander Vinogradov.
The expert believes that the gear ratios in the manual transmission are selected quite well, which makes the number of gears “tight,” contributing to intense acceleration and overall ease of control. However, there is some inconvenience associated with the gear shift mechanism. Vinogradov reported that sixth gear did not shift too clearly, sometimes he had to look for it, and it happened that fourth gear was switched on instead. He expressed hope for greater accuracy in the future update of this mechanism.
An important point that Vinogradov drew attention to was the noise level inside the car, which largely depends on the diesel engine. However, it should be noted that in the Sollers Argo the engine is located under the cabin and has virtually no sound insulation. Therefore, we can assume that in the diesel version of the UAZ Patriot the situation with noise in the cabin will be somewhat different.
