Digestive endoscopy in Senegal: towards a reference center in Dakar

At the beginning of October 2023, Professor Gabriel Rahmi, hepato-gastroenterologist and endoscopist at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital, was at the Principal Hospital in Dakar for a mission to support digestive endoscopy in Senegal. For 3 days, children suffering from caustic stenoses and adults suffering from pancreatic cancer were operated on by French-Senegalese teams.

Digestive endoscopy has undergone a real revolution over the last 10 years, both diagnostically and therapeutically. Minimally invasive treatments replacing a major surgical procedure allow a significant reduction in complications, a drastic reduction in mortality and a reduction in healthcare costs.

However, in sub-Saharan Africa where the prevalence of digestive pathologies is very high, digestive endoscopy remains very limited and therapeutic endoscopy almost non-existent. To enable Senegal and all West African countries to benefit from these surgical advances, Professor Gabriel Rahmi has been participating since 2020 in the development of a center of excellence for digestive endoscopy in Dakar.
