Argentine President Javier Milei unleashed a diplomatic crisis by calling President Gustavo Petro a “murderous communist.” In the next few hours, the Colombian ambassador in Argentina must take a flight back to the country to analyze the state of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Meanwhile, the Colombian diplomat described President Milei as a “hypocrite.”

“Milei is a hypocrite. While today he asks our government for approval for his new ambassador in Colombia, he calls President Gustavo Petro a murderer. He had already attacked Lula (Brazil) and even Pope Francis,” said ambassador Camilo Romero on his social networks.

Romero’s reaction has to do with the statements that Milei gave in an interview with CNN. The Argentine head of state described Gustavo Petro as a “murderous communist” when the journalist asked him for his opinion on the Colombian president’s management.

“We can think differently, but the region and the historical brotherhood of our people must be above the differences,” Romero reiterated.

The quarrel between Petro and Milei has been going on since the presidential race was taking place in Argentina. Milei was a candidate from the extreme right and, in the midst of the ideological clash, Petro managed to compare the Argentine politician with Hitler and the Chilean dictator, Augusto Pinochet.

“The extreme right has won in Argentina; It is the decision of your society. Sad for Latin America and we’ll see… neoliberalism no longer has a proposal for society, it cannot respond to humanity’s current problems,” was Petro’s reaction when he learned of Milei’s victory at the polls last November.

So, to prevent a possible diplomatic crisis with the Argentine government, President Petro and the Foreign Ministry had to later come out to recognize Milei’s victory at the polls and announce that relations between Colombia and Argentina will be respectful.

Now, with Milei’s statements, the Colombian Government considered that President Petro’s honor was violated.

“President Milei’s words ignore and violate the deep ties of friendship, understanding and cooperation that have historically united Colombia and Argentina, and that have been strengthened over two centuries. As a result of the circumstances created by the words of the President of Argentina, the Government of Colombia immediately calls Ambassador Camilo Romero, representative of Colombia in that country, for consultations,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

What does it mean to call for consultation?

After this call, the Colombian ambassador in Argentina must appear at the Foreign Ministry to review the state of relations between both countries. The diplomat must inform his country about President Milei’s pronouncements and will receive the instructions that correspond to the case. If he considers it pertinent or necessary, Colombia could put its diplomatic relationship with Argentina on hold.

Each country can use the call for consultation when it considers any discomfort or concern about its diplomatic ties with another nation.
