“Disappointed, but you have to be realistic”

Belinda Bencic has to pack her bags following the second round. Against the American Amanda Anisimova, the Swiss world number 22 clearly fails in two sets 2: 6, 5: 7. During the game she also struggles with physical problems and has to be treated several times.

Bencic explained to SRF following leaving: “It’s actually okay, the physios think it’s nothing bad. I think the pool just closed.” The injury is the result of the efforts of the last few weeks. “When I’m fitter once more and can prepare better, it’ll be fine once more.”

Nevertheless, she was of course “disappointed following the early exit, but I’m also realistic,” said Bencic. The few training sessions before the tournament didn’t give her the impression that she might go far. “Before the tournament, I didn’t think I might make it to the semifinals or even win the tournament.”

Of course she did her best, “but you have to be realistic and you can’t just come here with a few training sessions and think you can beat all the top players”.

Overall, the eastern Swiss is quite satisfied despite the disappointment. “My tennis is there, it’s solid, but I’m not in top form yet,” says Bencic. Anisimova also played great. “I fought and tried everything, but it just wasn’t enough today.”
