Disaster in sight on the cereal front

On the grain front, the news is also alarming. Wheat prices broke their 2008 record on major exchanges and rose 40% this week, an even more dramatic rise than oil and metals. A quarter of the wheat and barley trade, a fifth of the maize and most of the sunflower oil come from Russia and Ukraine, according to the International Grains Council (IGC).
