Disclosure of the best drink for diabetics • Al Marsad Newspaper

Al Marsad newspaper: Diabetes UK has revealed that water is the “best all-round drink” for diabetics.

Diabetes agrees: “Because water has no carbs or calories, it’s the ideal drink for people with diabetes.”

Studies have also shown, according to the Express, that drinking water can help control glucose (sugar) levels in the blood.

The results of one notable study, published in the journal Diabetes Care, indicated that when increased water intake, it can prevent or delay the onset of hyperglycemia and subsequent diabetes.

Participants who consumed more than one liter of water per day were 28% less likely to develop new hyperglycemia, compared to those who drank less than 500ml of water per day.

The researchers also highlighted the hormone vasopressin – which rises when dehydration occurs – as a potential risk factor for hyperglycemia and diabetes.

The authors concluded that increased water intake might reduce the likelihood of elevated vasopressin levels.

The Diabetes website explains: “People with diabetes require more fluids when blood glucose levels are high. This can result in the kidneys trying to excrete excess sugar through the urine. Water will not raise blood glucose levels, which is why it is so helpful. Drink it when diabetics suffer from high blood sugar, because it enables more glucose to be expelled from the blood.”

As a healthy body demonstrates, high blood sugar levels also emphasize the need for water.

“People with diabetes insipidus also have a higher risk of dehydration, but this is not associated with elevated blood glucose levels.”
