The “New York Times” uncovers the publication of secret US intelligence documents on the Ukraine war. Now the newspaper reports that the first information went online just a few days after Russia’s attack – in an easily accessible chat group.
According to a newspaper report, US intelligence documents were published earlier and in a much larger group than previously known. Just a few days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, confidential information was posted in a previously unknown chat group on the social platform Discord, which had around 600 members, reports the “New York Times”.
This chat group was publicly listed on a YouTube channel and easily accessible. The information was published by a Discord user whose profile matched that of Jack Teixeira, who was arrested a week ago. The US Department of Defense declined to comment.
The case is considered the most serious leak of secrets since 2010, when hundreds of thousands of documents, videos and internals appeared on the website of the Wikileaks disclosure platform. The leaks first became known through a report in the New York Times in early April.
Information about withdrawal from Kyiv
According to the current report, the newly discovered information includes details about victims of both sides, activities of the Moscow espionage authorities and aid to Ukraine. The user stated that he was posting data from the NSA, CIA and other secret services. The newspaper said it learned about it from a Discord user. For example, on March 27, 2022, secret information about the Russian withdrawal from Kiev is said to have been published.
It was previously known that documents had been circulating on the Internet for weeks. According to media reports, the 21-year-old Teixeira faces 10 to 15 years in prison. The suspect remained silent on the allegations in court. As a military employee, according to information from the Washington Post, he has had top-secret clearance since 2021 and thus access to sensitive information.
