A few kilometers from Florenville, the village of Chassepierre is mainly known for its famous international street arts festival which takes place every year in August.

It is true that the event attracts between 25,000 and 30,000 visitors each time. But to sum up this village to these festivities would not be fair, as it is full of things to discover throughout the year.

Arriving in Chassepierre, one is immediately struck by the tranquility of the village which has only a few hundred inhabitants. Among them, we find Marc Poncin. The man has always lived in the Gaume village. He has been the president of the festival for many years.

And his village, he knows it like the back of his hand. “Chassepierre certainly owes its name to the two Latin words “Casa Petra” which mean stone houses, explains the inhabitant. The town is notably made up of many houses from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as the church of Saint-Martin and its cemetery. This dates from 1702 and was listed in 1993.”

In the tertiary era

Not far from the church is a special place called the “Fairy Hole”, an exceptional witness to the geological times of the Tertiary era. “This network of underground galleries was dug by man in the limestone rock called cron, explains Marc Poncin.

In the 90s, new galleries were discovered under the foundations of the old mill, located below the church. All this has been restored and visitor access is free”.

Marked circuits

Chassepierre, nestled on the banks of the Semois, offers a multitude of walks to be carried out in the surroundings. To facilitate these, the 85-metre long Breux footbridge overlooks the famous river and has been connecting the two banks since 2013.

Marked circuits offer great moments for sports enthusiasts, whether on foot or by bike. On the top of the village, near the Florenville-Bouillon road, the Chassepierre viewpoint offers a superb view of the village and its surroundings as well as the meanders of the Semois.

“After these busy days in nature, what could be more normal than to take advantage of one of the two restaurants in the village, exclaims Marc Poncin. Between the two campsites and the many gîtes and guest rooms, there are many accommodation possibilities. While walking through the village, it is also possible to discover the old washhouses and the murals of a local artist.”

A magic tree and healing water

Finally, the Gaume village has a unique and magical tree called “L’Arbre Sainte-Barbe”. “It is located at the exit of the village in the direction of Laiche explains the villager. At the foot of the tree is a source with a low flow. In the past, this water was known for its healing properties and the healing of certain skin diseases”.

Chassepierre is a lively and lively village thanks to the many activities that take place there throughout the year. Thanks in particular to its theater group called Casa Petra Chassepierre or its farmer’s market which takes place every Sunday morning in the heart of the village.

Chassepierre is also a paradise for painters who draw inspiration from these dreamy settings along the Semois.
