Learn step-by-step to photograph the stars with the Astrophoto function in Samsung’s Expert Raw application

Until recently, capturing the stars and the shadow of the Milky Way in the sky was restricted to professional camera owners. However, the combination of the Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G* and the Expert RAW app1 made night sky photography an accessible experience for people who own a Samsung Galaxy device.

Using the Astrophoto function, it is possible to capture long exposure images by processing multiple frames, which in turn take into account the movements of celestial objects. All this in an intuitive and very practical way. When used, Astrofoto also shows the position of constellations and other celestial bodies on the smartphone screen, making it possible to find specific stars to produce breathtaking photos.

By using the Expert RAW application, people have access to other advanced features such as setting focus, exposure, ISO, white balance and shutter speed. The app offers images in RAW format which, unlike traditional photos compressed in JPEG, allows refinement when editing, without leaving any detail aside.

Check below how to photograph the stars using the Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G.

  1. Directly from the camera app, select the Expert RAW option by tapping “More”. Stabilize the Galaxy S23 Ultra 5G on a tripod so that it does not move while capturing the image.
  1. In the upper right corner, there is a constellation icon. Tap this button to activate Astrofoto.

  1. When activating the function, the option “Sky Guide” will appear. It is indicated if you want to select a specific constellation. There is also the possibility of configuring the time of exposure to the light of the record. For those who choose to photograph freely, without being attached to a particular constellation, the recommended thing is to deactivate the option.

Weather conditions greatly interfere with the visibility of the stars. Thus, the result will depend a lot on the location where the captures will be made and the clouds in the sky at the time of the photo. A tip: the darker the surrounding environment, the longer the exposure time should be.

The recommendation is for the photographer to freely explore the application’s settings, testing the results and verifying the different ways of capturing the same scenario.

Expert RAW with access to the Astrophoto feature is available on select models including Galaxy S23 5G, S23+ 5G, S23 Ultra 5G, Galaxy S22 5G, S22+ 5G, S22 Ultra 5G, Z Fold4 5G, S21 Ultra 5G, Z Fold3 5G, S20 Ultra 5G, Note20 Ultra and Z Fold2.
