Do you want to head to the coast for a weekend or for a few days during the end-of-year holidays? You shouldn’t miss a particular city. This is Ostend. The reason ? It occupies fifth place in the ranking of the best Christmas markets in Belgium according to European Best Destinations. Above all, it is the best placed coastal city if we rely on the results.

Two Christmas markets to discover
European Best Destinations explains: “If you like art, comfort, shopping, ice skating, Santa Claus, Christmas gifts and/or delicious cuisine, you should definitely visit Ostend this winter. Christmas is the perfect time to take a trip to Belgium and explore the seaside city. Ostend has not one but two (!) Christmas markets.
The first is at Place d’Armes. It houses, among other things, Santa’s house, a carousel, but also the “Magic Christmas Tree”. The second is installed in Léopold Park. In the program ? Small chalets located along the pond offering drinks, treats and typical Christmas items. Note the return of the indoor ice rink. Finally, special events and activities are regularly organized.
A 180 meter light tunnel
The platform also evokes the light tunnel installed in Adolf Buylstraat. The structure, stretched over more than 180 meters and made up of more than 230,000 colored LED lights, is making a comeback after three years of absence. Each day, two different light shows, accompanied by music, will offer a unique winter experience. The light tunnel is on display until Sunday January 7, 2024.
From December 24, 2023 and until January 7, 2024, you will also have the opportunity to admire a thousand Christmas trees forming a mysterious maze on Mariakerke beach intended for children and adults alike. Finally, if you find Christmas gifts but are not a fan of wrapping, you can stop by the wrapping bar at the Palais des festivals et de la culture where the paper has a marine theme.
