Everyone travels to Manali and Ooty during winter. After the heavy summer, the winter season comes. However, there are many places in this world that would love to see the sun someday. Oymyakon is one such area. Oymyakon is a rural area located along the Indigirka River in the Sakha Republic, a federal state of Russia. Part of the arctic tundra region, it is the coldest inhabited place in the world. Only about five hundred people have settled in this place.

The road itself is known as ‘The Road of Bones’. Due to extreme cold, the entire houses are always covered in snow. A heating plant operates to provide heat within the city. As for cars, the engine must always be running to avoid damage. Or store in a warm garage. Hence the fuel cost is generally higher here.

The most popular vehicle here is the Soviet-era Uyasik vans. They have fans in the passenger compartment that let the heat out. In winter it is dark 21 hours a day in Oymyakon. At this time people live with the help of generators.

There is only one school in the town. It also shuts down when the temperature drops below minus 50 degrees Celsius. It also has a post office, bank and airport.

Most of the toilets in Oymyakon are located on the street rather than inside houses. This is because plumbing through frozen ground is difficult.

There are no plants here due to extreme cold. Must rely on meat for food. The main food of the people is the meat of reindeer, arctic hares and horses and fish. They also use deer’s milk.

The lowest temperature was recorded here in 1993. It was minus 67.7 degrees that day. It is considered to be the lowest temperature in the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth.
