Walking you will find treasures. Thus happened a Sunday when the desire for a sweet got me up from the couch to walk the streets and find the perfect treat. In the Juana Alarco Park in Dammert I met Gou Gou, a brand that offers probably the best taiyakis I have ever tried. Discover in this note more about its proposal and history.

“The taiyaki foodbike starts from a much bigger idea that we already wanted to undertake. Something that the three of us really like, including Débora – another of the partners along with Ayumi – is Asian cuisine and culture,” explains Mayra Alfaro to Provecho, one of the three founders of GouGou.

They had the idea of starting a place, but to not wait any longer, they decided to offer some delicious Japanese pastries on a bicycle. “Ayumi and I usually travel by bicycle. One day we saw a woman delivering lunches on an adapted bicycle and she caught our attention. We decided to start with this, and it was also a product that we already had almost 100%,” adds Alfaro.

Little by little, they began to see the fillings to use in this adventure. The cake is usually filled with a fairly traditional Japanese sweet, a sweet red bean paste. But, in this case, the girls decided to go for different flavors, seeking to conquer the Peruvian public. “Peruvians like sweets, that’s why we decided on the four flavors we offer,” admits the founding partner.

The public reception is quite good, according to Ayumi Nakamine. They started at the end of January and the acceptance has allowed them to continue dreaming of new and different ideas to grow with the brand. “Right now we have several ideas and one is to have a retail sale, to start in different points of sale. Maybe go into wineries or cafes. In the medium term, it would be nice to open a store to expand on everything we had planned for a long time,” adds Nakamine.

Taiyaki is a kind of cupcake, understood as a dough that is cooked on a griddle with a characteristic shape: a carp fish, which Ayumi explains symbolizes “evolution and good fortune in difficult times.”

On the outside it has a somewhat crunchy texture, but at a minimal level. The inside, however, is a soft dough and GouGou includes a delicious filling. In this case, they offer four versions: pastry cream, lemon pie, cappuccino and hazelnuts. Each offers a different flavor profile, but they all aim to not overwhelm the taste buds with too much sweet and have a thick, ideal texture to complement.

Without a doubt, the homemade flavor and generous filling characterize the taiyakis of this brand, which with creativity and a perfect recipe have been conquering the public. A new dessert to satisfy your craving!
