The Dar Es Saada villa, near the Majorelle garden

At that time, Marrakech vibrated to the rhythm of swinging sixties and private parties, notably at Talitha and Paul Getty, whose Zahia palace was then purchased, many years later, by Arielle Dombasle and Bernard Henri-Lévy. The circle of Saint Laurent and Bergé includes the Getty, Loulou de la Falaise, Mick Jagger and even Andy Warhol. They sold Dar el-Hanch to their friend Fernando Sanchez in 1974 to buy a new one, the “house of happiness in serenity” in the Guéliz district. Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought the villa Dar Es Saada, neighboring the Majorelle garden, of which we discover here a beautiful range of vintage photographs. The outdoor pool decorated with water lilies, the garden where bougainvillea and palm trees abound and the interiors with traditional accents converse there. They learned in 1980 that the Majorelle Garden was threatened with destruction by a real estate project and decided to buy it and its adjoining villa, the former home of the painter Jacques Majorelle. The garden is restored, the old workshop is transformed into a museum of Islamic art decorated by Bill Willis before being dedicated to Berber art in 2011.

As for the villa, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé asked Bill Willi to renovate it to make it the Oasis villa, a sublime interior where artistic craftsmanship reigns. “It was Bill Willis who invented the modern decoration of Morocco. All decorators were inspired by him and his influence is evident in houses, palaces and hotels” writes Pierre Bergé in the book A Moroccan Passion published by Éditions de La Martinière. Redesigned in 2000 by landscaper Madison Cox, the garden is one of the most visited in Morocco, with nearly 800,000 visitors per year.
