« Polar au Palace ». The name rings like a gunshot, which is good, because moviegoers are likely to hear a lot of it during the six days of the festival.

From Wednesday 15 to Tuesday 21 November 2023, at associative cinema of Équeurdreville (rue des Résistants), 19 films of all kinds will be offered on the detective theme.

“This is the 10th edition of this event which is eagerly awaited every year in Cherbourg’s cultural life,” underlines Catherine Gentile, deputy mayor of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin in charge of culture.

There will be gendarmes and bandits of course, in works of various styles: noir, suspense, legal, thriller and even comic. We are expecting a large audience to celebrate this anniversary by discovering an eclectic and international program, with very recent films as well as heritage films, analyzed and commented on during wonderful evenings of discussion.

Note that ten of them will be broadcast in original version with subtitles.

Children (from 6 years old) will be the first served (normal, on a Wednesday!), because they are offered, from the start of the program at 2:30 p.m., the animated film Nina and the secret of the hedgehog (released the same day, with the voices of Audrey Tautou and Guillaume Canet), followed by Detective Conan: The Black Submarinea Japanese manga (ages 10 and up) released this summer.

Two films will follow at 6:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.: Infiltrated et Green algae. “A lot of people on vacation missed it this summer,” assures Michel Rey. It’s a beautiful investigative film about green algae scandal in Brittany. »

Travel, educate yourself, relax…

Going to the movies is also traveling: to Casablanca (Morocco) for the thriller The Packs ; in Kazakhstan with Assault ; in Oklahoma (United States) at the beginning of the 20th century in the heart of a Native American tribe with Killers of the Flower Moon ; in Guatemala with Infiltrated ; in Hong Kong with Limbo, “in black and white, qualified as the thriller of the year”; in Mexico with Lost in the Night ; in Spain with Out of time

Going to the cinema is also about self-cultivation. Do you lack knowledge about the world of justice? So don’t miss the evening of Monday, November 10. The screening, at 8 p.m., of the famous documentary by Raymond Depardon, 10th Chamber: audience momentswill be followed by discussions with the president of the Cherbourg judicial court, David Arteil, the public prosecutor, Pierre-Yves Marot, the lawyer Me Piedagnel, Madame the president of the bar, Me Clerfond, and also Emmanuel Lemesle , the legal columnist of West France at the Cherbourg court, which has just released a book on this theme entitled Les dos du Mardi. All angles will therefore be addressed, whether we are on the side of the magistrates, the defenders (victims as well as the accused) or the public.

Going to the movies is also about relaxing. This will be the mission of the Fifi’s Bandled by Tarek Boudali and Philippe Lacheau, thanks to the comedy 3 Days Max. The story of Rayane, a clumsy police officer who will try everything to free his grandmother kidnapped by a Mexican cartel…

Two cult films analyzed

Going to the cinema, finally, is seeing or rewatching in superb sound and picture conditions (“with our new laser projector which provides incredible quality”) cult films like Vivement Dimanche, the last François Truffaut released 40 years ago, and Goodfellas, by Martin Scorsese, released in 1990.

Please note that they will be commented on by two cinema teachers from Millet high school : the first by Estelle Riout, the second by Nicolas Boscher. These are all good reasons to step through the doors of a Palace with refined taste without moderation.
