Hapcheon Meteorite Impact Zone Special Exhibition Hall

[충청뉴스 이성현 기자] The Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) announced that it will hold a special exhibition titled ‘Hapcheon Meteorite Impact Zone’, traces of a meteorite impact 50,000 years ago, the first in Korea, at the Geological Museum until March 3 next year.

This special exhibition was planned by gathering evidence of the formation background and research process of the ‘Hapcheon Meteorite Impact Zone’, which is said to be ‘the first on the Korean Peninsula and the second in East Asia’.

From the origin of the meteorite, various evidence discovered at the Hapcheon meteorite impact site are on display, as well as physical samples of drill cores obtained during drilling work to understand the underground cross-section of the meteorite impact. In particular, impact breccias, which are created by piling up rocks shattered by the powerful impact that occurs during a meteorite impact, can be directly observed under a microscope, and an exhibition area has also been set up where the three-dimensional shape of the Hapcheon meteorite impact crater can be observed in a 3D model.

This exhibition also introduces research cases from the Chicxulub crater at the end of the Cretaceous period. In addition, you can see various human efforts to track small celestial bodies and change the orbit of asteroids, which are humankind’s various efforts to avoid serious environmental changes, mass extinctions, and the risk of meteorite impacts.

Lee Hang-jae, director of the Geological Museum, said, “We are happy to be able to open a special exhibition that can inform the public and future science dreamers of scientific knowledge about the first meteorite impact crater on the Korean Peninsula.” He added, “As we welcome the end of the year and the new year, the mystery of the meteorite crater and various scientific evidence are revealed.” “I hope this will be an opportunity to learn about and experience them,” he said.

Director Lee Pyeong-gu said, “I am very happy to be able to introduce the Jeongjung-Chogye Basin, the first meteorite impact site on the Korean peninsula, which has been a long-awaited dream of the domestic geology community, to the general public in an easier and more friendly way.” He added, “Warm winter at the Geological Museum, which can be visited at any time by anyone of any age. “I hope you have a meaningful time of learning and experience.”

Meanwhile, this Hapcheon Meteorite Impact Zone special exhibition can also be viewed on the KIGAM Naver Earth iN blog and the Do Dream YouTube channel.
