Do you know the name of the most common genetic disease in the world? The number of cases of this disease has increased by 50% in ten years in France. We tell you more.
400 babies are born with this disease
Every year in France, 400 babies are born with this genetic disease, the most common in the world: sickle cell disease. In France, the number of cases has increased sharply in ten years, particularly in Ile-de-France and in the departments Overseas
What is sickle cell disease?
Sickle cell disease is a severe chronic blood disease and more particularly hemoglobin, a protein present inside red blood cells. Hemoglobin is used to transport oxygen from the lungs to the organs. Sickle cell disease causes deformation of blood cells redness and blockage of small blood vessels. This causes anemia. Patients suffer from sharp pains. In severe forms, without treatment, patients can die from sickle cell disease.
What are the treatments for sickle cell disease?
The only curative treatment for this genetic disease is bone marrow transplant. Today, patient associations call on parents to get tested before conceiving a child. From January 2023, all newborns are now screened. Until now, screening was only reserved for families most at risk of African, Caribbean or Mediterranean origin.
