Wear OS 5.1 is built on Android 15, following Wear OS 5 / Android 14, Wear OS 4 / Android 13, and wear OS 3 / Android 11. As of March 2025,it is not yet available for the original Pixel Watch or any LTE models. Google plans to release the next Pixel Watch update in June, continuing with quarterly updates.
For app developers, Wear OS 5.1 introduces two key features:
- Credential manager support: The Credential Manager API aims to provide a unified authentication solution. It supports sign-in flows using passwords, passkeys, and federated identity (such as Sign In with Google). User credentials are securely stored in a credential provider, which syncs account information across devices.
- Watch speaker playback: On devices that support media playback through the watch speaker, users can now select this speaker as thier preferred media output option, provided the app integrates with the Wear Output Switcher.
Force Global AOD Experience
A new Developer option gives users the ability to bypass the blurred clock display when the wrist is lowered while using apps. For additional information, refer to this resource.
Active watch face tweak
The Active watch face on the Pixel Watch 3 has received a design adjustment. with the AOD feature activated, the time is no longer displayed in a hollowed-out style and is now presented within a pill-shaped container.

Dr. Sharma: I would say the Auto Bedtime mode on the Pixel Watch 2, is a headliner, originally introduced on the PW3. Also,the improved step tracking algorithm is something that a lot of people will appreciate.It’s great to see Google responding to requests like stroller jogging, pushing shopping cart, wheelchair use and hiking with poles. Media controls will be a game-changer too,when released,making it easier to control audio content directly from the watch. there is also loss of pulse detection for Pixel Watch 3 as well as Menstrual tracking, adding so many vital features.
Future of Wear OS: A Thought-Provoking Question
Archyde: The original Pixel Watch still isn’t included in this update and no LTE models are compatible, this is concerning, so what impact will the delayed support of the original Pixel Watch and LTE models have on user perceptions of the Wear OS ecosystem, and what steps can Google take to mitigate any potential negative sentiment?
Dr. Sharma: That’s a great question and, honestly, one that Google needs to address directly. Leaving older devices behind creates fragmentation and disappoints loyal users. To counter this,Google needs to improve transparency regarding support timelines,offer compelling upgrade incentives,and even consider lightweight versions of Wear OS for older hardware. Longevity of software support is becoming increasingly vital for consumer satisfaction.
