Discovering the Codex of the Cross-Badiano: A Journey into Ancient Mexica Herbalism

He A pamphlet on Indian medicinal herbsbetter known as Codex of the Cross-Badiano, is a treatise on Mexica herbalism from the 16th century written by two eminent Nahuas who belonged to the College of Tlatelolco: Martín de la Cruz and Juan Badiano. The first was a doctor expert in the knowledge of plants and their healing uses; while the second, thanks to his command of the language, was in charge of translating the work from Nahuatl to Latin.

The small book is divided into 13 chapters. The first to the eighth refers to diseases of the body, starting from the head to the feet; From the ninth onwards it talks regarding different remedies for physical and mental ailments. The catalog of plants is made up of 227, of which 185 are illustrated, with their name in Nahuatl, as well as a description and instructions for use in Latin.

This important codex returned to Mexico in the 20th century, following having been in European libraries for hundreds of years. It is currently kept in the National Library of Anthropology and History.
