Discovering the Hidden Ocean Inside Earth’s Crust: The Astonishing Findings in the Atlantic Ocean

2023-12-02 12:28:37

Scientists have discovered that there is an ocean inside the Earth’s crust. Located 400 miles below the Earth’s surface, it lies within a rock called ringwoodite. Just as sponges can absorb and store water, so can ringwoodites. The crystal structure of ring woodite allows for this.

A large amount of water can be stored inside these sponges. Scientists say that if even one percent of these rocks contained water, they would hold three times the amount of water in all of Earth’s oceans. Meanwhile, scientists discovered a large water source in the Atlantic Ocean. It extends from Brazil to the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa. This body of water, known as the Atlantic Equatorial Water, is parallel to the equator. This is due to the special mixing of ocean currents north and south of the equator.

Scientists have already discovered such mixed water sources in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. This is the first time that they have been found in the Atlantic Ocean. The findings were published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
