Retired from national education, Jacques Giust from Nîmes is a fine connoisseur of the history of jazz.
“Given my age, maybe I’ll last another 5 years,” laughs Jacques Giust, well into his 70s who is celebrating the 5th anniversary of his show “Jazz à Nîmes”, on the Radio Nîmes association channel. Retired from national education, he already knew that he had a radio voice identified in his former activities, but he discovered a new activity by sitting in front of the microphone. “At the beginning, I wanted to master everything. But from the second number, Michel Legrand died and I had to postpone the planned broadcast,” explains the presenter, a fine connoisseur of the history of jazz, but also of all the others cultural disciplines.
For this anniversary, Jacques Giust, who also participates in the Jazz 70 association, has designed two special programs, one heritage revisiting the great times of jazz, the other exploring the margins, neighboring music and in particular song.
A nod to local news
With more than 1,000 podcasts, the show, presented twice a month, has found its place among music lovers, wandering between historical figures, current events and nods to the local area. “I learned to mix current events without being totally dependent on it,” explains Jacques Giust, who has devoted programs to the biography festival or the relationship between jazz and flamenco. Each time, he resituates the pieces he presents and delivers a few anecdotes. “I’ve been studying jazz for a long time. All my thinking about art came from jazz,” he explains.
Supported by Edith Quettelart, daughter of the founder of the radio, who “gives him total freedom”, Jacques Giust shares through this music that he has listened to since the age of 10 his passion for art, “which shows the most beautiful part of the world.”
