Dismantling of Criminal Gang Linked to 17 Violent Vehicle Thefts: The Encerronas Case

Carabineros dismantled a criminal gang to which at least 17 crimes of violent vehicle thefts are linked in the last two years. which were perpetrated mainly on highways and the eastern part of the capital.

In 2022, the Police Investigation Section (SIP) of the 37th Vitacura Police Station began an investigation into various armed crimes that affected drivers in the eastern area.

The gang nicknamed “The damned ones of the encerronas”, would have carried out at least 17 robberies with intimidation and violent robberies, of which, 11 occurred in Vitacura, Ñuñoa and Las Condes.

The leader of the group would be Luis Valenzuela, of legal age, who contacted the other members, mostly minors.

The investigation established that their modus operandi was to travel aboard smaller vehicles, armed with guns and knives, sometimes hooded, but always with violence as the main trigger for the robbery.

Personal Police arrested 8 subjects, including a woman, while two other members remain at large. And among them is Benjamín Andrés Núñez Farías, linked to at least 5 robberies, and Milan Leonardo González Castro.

“They are linked and “They have been identified in 17 crimes that have been committed.”according to the prefect of the Eastern Prefecture, Colonel Gerardo Aravena.

Within the group, one subject had an amputated leg after committing an attack. Since he was run over by one of his victims, he managed to flee the crime.

To date, Carabineros has managed to recover 10 cars, both in Santiago and in regions such as Parral, Viña del Mar and Antofagasta.

Early this Wednesday they raided two homes in Maipú and La Florida, and a collection center was discovered in Peñaflor.

Prosecutor Carlos López pointed out that “there may be more crimes, we are working on that. And today they will only be formalized for which we have the means of proof necessary for formalization.”
