Disney and Epic Games Bridge Theme Parks and Fortnite with New Star Wars Integration
Disney and Epic Games are actively blurring the lines between physical theme parks and digital spaces by connecting live attractions to the Fortnite ecosystem. According to The Walt Disney Company, visitors to the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim and Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando can accept a mission that will earn rewards in the Fortnite extension of the ride.
This initiative represents a significant operational shift for traditional entertainment giants. By weaving interactive park experiences directly into a platform with over half a billion registered players, Disney is leaning heavily into consumer-facing digital ecosystems. The strategy hinges on giving audiences new ways to interact with intellectual property before, during, and long after a physical park visit or a theatrical release.
“Gaming is where new generations of fans are discovering Disney,” said Sean Shoptaw, EVP, Disney Games & Digital Entertainment, in an official company statement. “By creating experiences that drive meaningful connections, we’re giving players new ways to engage with our characters and franchises, while building communities that grow and thrive far beyond a single moment or platform.”
Building the Largest IP Toolset in Fortnite
The core of this digital expansion relies on the newly introduced STAR WARS Toolkit developed by Lucasfilm and Epic Games. Billed as the largest IP toolset in Fortnite, the platform enables creators to build entirely original experiences utilizing iconic vehicles, environments, and characters from the galaxy far, far away.
According to Disney’s official announcements, players can explore thousands of community- and developer-built islands showcasing different gameplay mechanics. Experiences like Galactic Siege, Escape Vader, and Droid Tycoon allow users to transition smoothly between high-stakes combat and strategic problem-solving across PC, console, and mobile devices.
This modular approach lets Epic Games scale its platform while keeping brand standards firmly under Disney’s control. Saxs Persson, Executive Vice President at Epic Games, noted that the partnership was built around the idea of “a persistent place where all things Disney can live” inside the broader Fortnite framework, according to Times of Blockchain.
Expanding Theme Park Control and Digital Footprints
On the physical front, the integration coincides with a major update to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The attraction now features a brand-new mission starring Din Djarin and Grogu. For the first time, guests can choose which location to explore during the adventure, introducing previously unseen levels of guest control on the attraction.

This physical-to-digital bridge follows Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games. Industry observers view the collaboration as an efficient model for legacy media companies aiming to establish a metaverse presence without constructing isolated, high-risk standalone virtual worlds from scratch.
By embedding branded experiences directly into an existing ecosystem, Disney minimizes technical friction while capturing real-time audience engagement data. As these platforms continue to evolve, the boundary between riding an attraction in Anaheim and unlocking rewards on a mobile device thousands of miles away will only continue to dissolve. What other park experiences do you think deserve a direct tie-in to the digital space?
