The CEO of DisneyBob Iger, announced this week that the production of series and films of the Marvel and Lucasfilm, responsible for the saga Star Warswill be slowed down to cut costs and optimize content release strategy.

In an interview with CNBC, Bob Iger claimed that he returned to command Disney at the end of 2022 with the aim of making the company’s digital business more profitable. For this, costs were cut and the Marvel and Star Wars franchises were also affected.

“(Marvel) wasn’t in the television business to any significant degree, and they not only ramped up movie production, but they ended up doing multiple TV series. Frankly, it diluted focus and attention,” stated Bob Iger.

The executive said that Marvel’s upcoming productions and need for sequels will be reassessed. Iger also commented on Pixar’s streaming releases. Disney Pluswhich, according to him, drove viewers away from cinemas.

“There have been three straight Pixar releases that have gone straight to Disney Plus in the pandemic, and I think that may have created an expectation in the public that they would eventually be streaming — and likely, quickly — and there wasn’t an urgency. At the same time, we have to agree that there were creative flaws as well,” commented Iger.

Iger also revealed that the company is considering selling its TV investments. It’s worth remembering that Disney has been cutting spending in several areas in recent months. The latest films released by the company are also with lower-than-expected box office.

Another point highlighted in the interview was the writers’ strike, which has been going on since May, and the actors’ strike, which started this week. Bob Iger stated that professionals are not being “realistic” with their expectations and with the current market scenario.
