Disparities in Informal Employment: Impact on Working Time, Remuneration, and Productivity

Informal employees work an annual average of 145 hours more than their formal counterparts, while receiving an average salary five times lower, said Ahmed Lahlimi Alami.

The predominance of informal work leads to significant disparities in terms of working time, remuneration and productivity, stressed Mr. Lahlimi. The reallocations of employment between sectors with low productivity do not favor a transformation of the structures of production of the national economy and contribute to the stagnation of productivity and the weakness of economic growth while allowing an environment favorable to the development of an informal sphere that permeates all branches of activity, he pointed out.

Referring to the employment of women, the High Commissioner for Planning indicated that the results of the CSE show a rate of feminization of employment which is still far from parity, adding that the low qualification of women currently in employment and the concentration of a large part of women’s work in family aids in the agricultural sector increases the risk of inactivity with the release of surplus agricultural labour. And to note that the results of the CSE give a new illustration of the precariousness of female employment which is under-represented in high-skilled jobs in qualitative and quantitative terms, where the proportion of women occupying managerial and technical positions does not exceed 15% of the employed female population, while 71% are laborers
