Hernan Bass “hoot hoot”
American artist Hernan Bass’s expressive installations are celebrated for their romantic quality by using rich swatches of color to create an italic perspective, oscillating between representation and abstraction. The present is drawn on paper and inspired by the sight and sound of birds that Bass experienced on his morning walks through the French region of Giverny.
The gray and brown owl evokes the tradition of the tall bird in art history where a ‘bass’ bird stands on a branch, and recalls ecclesiastical works such as Vincent van Gogh, Barn Baume Seen from the Front (1887) and Albrecht Dürer’s Little Owl (1506). Despite the familiarity of the bird and its surroundings, the mysterious element of abstraction, which characterizes the work of Bass, plays its role.

Ripples by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama

The composition is covered in the iconic infinity net pattern. The painting is also decorated with rendered images of faded and damaged autumn leaves. Kusama weaves these into a swirl of bright blue, rusty red, black and white. It makes familiar images look strange and attracts the eye.
