The case testifies to “unbridled violence that we must fight with determination,” said government spokesman Olivier Véran on Wednesday. The pensioner, whom one of the three young people is said to have beaten up last week in the northern French town of Vieux-Condé, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday.

The youths are said to have attacked the man after he asked them to make less noise outside his house late Wednesday evening last week. An “argument” is said to have taken place before the attack, but according to the public prosecutor’s knowledge there are no eyewitnesses to the attack itself. A driver is said to have found the man lying on the ground shortly after midnight.

The three alleged perpetrators are teenagers, according to the prosecutor’s office, they live in a community near the crime scene and have no criminal records. They were taken into police custody the day after the crime. The 17-year-old, the alleged main perpetrator, is being investigated for negligent homicide, and the other two young people are accused of, among other things, failing to provide assistance. According to prosecutors, all three expressed signs of remorse.

“This drama will not go unpunished,” said Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, speaking of a “cowardly attack.” Marine Le Pen, party leader of the far-right opposition party Rassemblement National, saw the attack as a sign of a “complete loss of respect for human life” and a “brutalization” of a part of society.
