Consumer-grade services optimize heavily for convenience. Whether this decentralized momentum can scale past technical enthusiasts to reach mainstream consumers remains to be seen. But as subscription costs rise and privacy regulations tighten, the era of blindly trusting third-party servers with unencrypted files faces its most serious technical reckoning yet.
