Recently, Apple was awarded a new patent, which reveals that Apple is seriously studying how to help users use iPhone “while swimming.” Although Apple Watch Ultra can already perform various operations in water, such as depth measurement and time display, this is obviously not enough for some users. Apple said that as electronic devices are increasingly made to be waterproof, some users may still operate their devices while engaging in water activities or when their devices come into contact with water or other liquids.

Apple’s patent text assumes people will want to play videos in water, using “drawing apps” [或] Presentation application (e.g. Keynote)…”. However, the drawings in the patent show a more practical or likely use, such as taking photos of fish. Apple’s real purpose is to make certain tasks faster on the iPhone.

So this patent suggests a better way, at least when it comes to iPhone use in water. This method provides electronic devices with a faster and more efficient method of accessing user interfaces in water, as well as interfaces for interacting with the device while it is in water. For example, similar to the new Accessibility feature in iOS 17, an iPhone can display only its primary function. Instead of the regular app home screen, users may see six enlarged buttons such as Camera, Messages, etc.

The patent is credited to 16 inventors, most of whom previously worked on an underwater photography patent granted in 2020. This shows Apple’s in-depth research and innovative spirit in this field.
