DNIT seizes the largest shipment of smuggled tomatoes near Abasto

Asuncion, IP Agency.- Agents of the National Tax Revenue Directorate (DNIT) seized on Tuesday some 40 tons of tomatoes illegally brought into the country. It is the largest shipment of this product that the institution has seized in the framework of its fight against smuggling.

The preliminary quantification of the interveners, accompanied by the Prosecutor’s Office, estimated the tomatoes that were found in a warehouse near the municipal market of Abasto de Asunción at 40,000 kilos.

The cargo was of Brazilian origin and was intended to be sold on the local market as a national product.

The DNIT had determined a similar modus operandi in a previous seizure, carried out in the city of Areguá, when 14,000 kilos of smuggled tomatoes were detected.

The cargo seized today will be transferred to Gical’s warehouses where it will be inspected by Senave technicians to determine its safety. If this is the case, it will be donated, as on other occasions, to care centers, nursing homes and food banks.
