Do you have to be vain to succeed?

The Credit Suisse debacle is often blamed on the vanity of past executives. That’s partly right. However, those who succeed are often vain too: Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs or Elon Musk. Is it the hallmark of leaders to have a very high opinion of themselves? Often they have business successes and human failures. Would they have succeeded if they weren’t vain?
