The next episode of The Last of Us, which will be released early on HBO Max, will feature a major threat never seen before in the series. While the infected were sidelined in the last two episodes of the series, now they will again pose a danger, with a new type being introduced to the audience of the adaptation.
The fourth episode of the HBO production has even prepared fans for the arrival of the new threat, with a scene that certainly did not go unnoticed by older fans. During a conversation between Kathleen and Perry, two new characters, we see a huge crack in the ground that indicates a terrible height approaching.
What’s under the ground?
While the episode didn’t reveal what’s underneath the cracked floor, it’s extremely likely to be a pufferfish, a type of infected that has yet to be seen in the series. Kathleen and Perry are very worried, as if they know what is behind the crack, and choose to hide the threat from the other Hunters so that fear does not affect them.
The puffer fish is a much stronger type of infected than the common ones, presenting a very advanced stage of the infection. In Naughty Dog’s game, the pufferfish are people who have been infected with cordyceps for over two decades, which is perhaps repeated in the series. With the fungus taking over the victim’s entire body, large plaques are created on all limbs, which makes them practically armor. In addition, the fungus also causes swelling, which increases the height and width of the body, making them considerably strong.
