Doctor Petit, an emergency doctor from the CMH de Bra, in Kirikhan (Turkey) with B-Fast

B-Fast has just set up its field hospital in Kirikhan, in southeastern Turkey, not far from the Syrian border, a region badly affected by a recent earthquake. In this anthill, Doctor Jonathan Petit. The one who works at the Helicopter Medical Center, CMH of Bra-sur-Lienne (Lierneux), is on his third mission with B-Fast. Of his first contact with Turkey, he notes: “I did not see any scenes of desolation. We accessed the field hospital by open roads but we know that in the region there is a lot of destruction and that the stability of the buildings is no longer guaranteed. .”

Pathologies

The pathologies are of various kinds: “We treat injuries directly related to the earthquake, the collapse of a house for example. We also take care of older traumatic wounds, which did not necessarily receive adequate care at the beginning. Due to the circumstances , other pathologies develop, linked for example to nights spent under minus 5 degrees in a tent”, he said, emphasizing that all pathologies are treated in this field hospital. Language ? Our interlocutor highlights that local translators, a doctor or people from B-Fast, speaking Turkish, take care of removing this language barrier. But he insists: “There is a part of human relations that does not go through language. An outstretched hand, a smile for example”confides the specialist who points to the good reception received: “There are a lot of refugee camps near our hospital, we greet each other. The relationship with our patients is very cordial and they are grateful for our presence and our work.”

“Do things right!”

Each mission is different. Still present in Turkey today, the doctor will draw the conclusions later but already, he explains: “We get out of our comfort zone. This allows us to re-examine certain little details of life, why we want to do this job, why we do it.” What about his job at CMH? He humorously points out: “The bed to rest between two missions at the CMH is a good bed!” More seriously, he confides: “Here, the conditions are special. At the CMH, the terrain is our limit. Here too, we work in tents, for example. But everywhere, we want excellence, to do things well!”
