Doctors Without Borders suspends care for migrants in Darién

The ONG Doctors Without Borders announced the suspension of its humanitarian work in the Darién jungle by orders of the government of Panama. According to the group, the lack of an agreement between the parties forces them to put a stop to their work.

“Since Monday, March 4, the medical-humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) was forced to suspend all medical activities for the migrant population in the Darién by order of the Panamanian authorities, who allege that MSF currently does not have a current collaboration agreement with the Ministry of HealthDoctors Without Borders detailed in a statement.

According to the organization they have “tried in vain to obtain said renewal since October 2023”.

The year 2023 closed with 520,085 migrants who crossed the Darién jungleof which 120,000 were minors, a record number compared to the 248,283 pedestrians who in 2022 followed this dangerous route to North America in search of new and better opportunities.

Venezuelans, 328,667; Ecuadorians, 57,222; Haitians, 46,558 “were the most frequent nationalities to cross” last year the border jungle with Colombia and Panama, the Ministry of Public Security of Panama reported on its social networks (Mind you).
