Dodger Stadium workers approve a strike

THE ANGELS (AP) — Dodger Stadium concession workers have voted to authorize a strike days before the MLB All-Star Game begins in Los Angeles.

Workers at Compass Group dealerships and its subsidiary Levy Restaurants voted 99% in favor to authorize the strike, which could start at any time, according to Unite Here Local 11. The union is seeking what they consider “a new contract just”.

Levy employs nearly 1,500 food workers, servers, suite attendants, cooks and dishwashers at the stadium, which will host the All-Star Game for the first time since 1980. Events kick off on Saturday and culminate with the game on July 19.

“They are the mainstay of our tourism and sports industry, but many are struggling to keep their homes and make ends meet,” said Susan Minato, co-president of the union. “No worker should continue to live like this.”

The union represents more than 32,000 hospitality workers in Southern California and Arizona.

On Monday the MLB Players Association assured that they are on the side of the workers.

“They deserve fair treatment and will continue to have the 1,200 members of the MLBPA on their side,” he said in a statement.
