There is no doubt that caffeine is one of the nutrients that are beneficial to the body, as it helps to feel alert, increase focus and enhance attention, but it is rumored that excessive caffeine causes an increase in eye pressure, is this true?

A recent study by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai recommends moderation, because excessive caffeine increases the risk of more than three times the risk of developing glaucoma or glaucoma.

The researchers came to this alarming result, by requiring more than 120,000 people between 2006 and 2010, aged 39 to 73, to answer a questionnaire that included questions about the number of drinks and the amount of foods with caffeine consumed daily and family history with glaucoma, with an analysis of A sample of their DNA.

When the researchers examined the IOP and eye measurements of the participants 3 years into the study, they found that consuming more than 480 milligrams of caffeine per day – the equivalent of 4 cups of coffee – raised the risk of glaucoma in people with a family history of glaucoma.

Accordingly, the research team advised those who have a genetic predisposition to glaucoma, to moderate their intake of caffeine, to avoid high intraocular pressure completely.
