Dominican Republic enters the final stage of the campaign for the municipal elections

Santo Domingo, Feb 11 (EFE).- The Dominican Republic entered this Sunday into the final stage of the electoral campaign for the municipal elections on February 18, of high interest for the ruling party and the opposition in the face of the presidential and legislative elections. next May 19.

A little more than 8.1 million Dominicans are called for the elections, in which 158 mayors, 1,164 councilors, 235 municipal directors and 735 members will be chosen, while the Central Electoral Board (JCE), organizer of the contest, will qualify 16,851 polling stations in 4,295 precincts.

The main square is that of the capital, currently in the power of Carolina Mejía, general secretary of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and who aspires to revalidate her mandate.

Mejía, daughter of former Dominican president Hipólito Mejía, will face, as in 2020, Domingo Contreras, from the opposition Rescate RD alliance, made up of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), the Fuerza del Pueblo and the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD).

Another town of great interest is that of Santiago, in the north of the country, whose mayor is Abel Martínez, presidential candidate of the PLD, and that of the Santo Domingo Este municipality, the largest in Santo Domingo, currently in the power of the ruling PRM, which has the majority of the mayors and the National Congress (bicameral).

This Sunday, the president of the country, Luis Abinader, who will run in the May elections for the PRM, and the three-time head of state Leonel Fernández, of the People’s Force, measured forces in Santo Domingo, in massive support caravans to the municipal candidates, in the final stretch of the campaign, which will officially end on Thursday.

Accompanied by Carolina Mejía, Abinader said that what is coming “is a tsunami” in reference to the victory that he assures his party will obtain next Sunday.

The victory of the PRM in the capital will be “unprecedented”, as in much of the national territory, he stated.

For his part, while passing through Santo Domingo Oeste, former President Fernández affirmed that the “victory” of his party in the upcoming elections “is assured.”

The ruling PRM, which emerged in 2014 after the division of the once majority PRD, assures that together with the allied parties it will win 70% of the mayoralties, a number more or less similar to what the Rescate RD alliance assures it will achieve.

The three opposition parties will be allies in 145 mayoralties and 215 municipal district board directorates, which represents 91% of the national geography.

Likewise, they will bring common candidacies for senators in 17 of the 32 provinces for the elections on May 19.

The three political organizations also agreed to support the candidate of those formations who qualifies for an eventual second round, which if necessary would be held on June 30.

Independent polls assure that Abinader would win in the first round, and that former President Fernández, of Fuerza del Pueblo, would be behind; and Abel Martínez, from the PLD.
