The businessman-turned-politician took to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Wednesday to refute director Chris Columbus’ claim that he insisted heavily on making an appearance in the film in exchange for permission to film inside his hotel.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” insisted Donald Trump. This cameo contributed to the success of the film, but if they felt intimidated or didn’t want me, why did they put me in the film and keep me there for over 30 years ? Because I was, and still am, great for the film, that’s why! He’s just another Hollywood guy from the past looking for a quick fix to get publicity on Trump!”
The former US president claimed that filmmakers begged him to appear in the holiday classic and he reluctantly agreed because they were “persistent.” “That little cameo took off like a rocket and the film was a big success, and still is, especially at Christmas time. People call me every time it airs,” he added.
During an interview given in 2020 to Business InsiderChris Columbus claimed that they paid a filming fee at the Plaza Hotel, but that Donald Trump, who owned it at the time, still insisted that he make a cameo.
“He said, ‘You can only use the Plaza if I’m in the movie,’” the filmmaker said. So we agreed to put him in the film, and when we first screened it, a strange thing happened: People were clapping when Trump appeared on screen. So I told my editor, “Leave it in the film. It’s a moment for the public.” But he forced himself to be in the film.”
