Dovizioso will retire in September

Andrea Dovizioso will retire from the premier class at the end of the San Marino GP in early September, his team, Yamaha, announced on Thursday.

The Italian has finished second in the MotoGP World Championship three times.

Dovizioso, who is 36, originally planned to stay with the team until the end of the season. ‘But he recently decided to end his career during his home race at Misano’, contested on September 4 in Italy, explained the Japanese manufacturer.

“Unfortunately, in recent years MotoGP has changed dramatically. The situation has been very different since: I have never felt comfortable with the bike, and I have not been able to make the most of its potential, ”commented the Italian, quoted in the press release.

2008 125cc world champion Andrea Dovizioso currently sits 22nd in the drivers’ standings before the season resumes this weekend in Great Britain. Briton Cal Crutchlow, official Yamaha test rider, will succeed him for the last six races of the season.
