Dozens dead and injured in a horrific fire in an Egyptian church

A fire broke out in the Abu Seifin Church in the Imbaba neighborhood, west of the Egyptian capital, on Sunday morning, resulting in dozens of victims, including more than 40 people, at least.

Meanwhile, a statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Health stated that “55 cases were transferred to hospitals in the accident of the fire of the Church of Martyr Abu Sefein in Imbaba. The deaths are being counted.”

For his part, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi announced that he is closely following the developments of the accident, and said on his page on the communication sites that he directed all concerned state agencies and institutions to take all necessary measures and immediately to deal with this accident and its effects, and to provide all aspects of health care for the injured. He extends his sincere condolences to the families of the innocent victims.

In turn, Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said that 51 people injured in the fire were transferred to hospitals for treatment.

Later, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior confirmed the control of the fire, which it said broke out in one of the air conditioning units in the building as a result of an electrical fault, which led to the emission of a thick amount of smoke, “which was the main cause of injuries and deaths.”

The Egyptian Public Prosecution stated that the Public Prosecutor ordered the formation of a large team to investigate the incident.
