Dozens injured and arrested during a Palestinian funeral in Jerusalem

More than seventy Palestinians were injured and about fifty others were arrested, yesterday, Tuesday, in clashes with Israeli forces during a Palestinian funeral in occupied East Jerusalem, according to Palestinian sources, while Israeli forces shot a Palestinian in Nablus, after they were suspected of trying to carry out a stabbing attack. French President Emmanuel Macron, during a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, expressed concern over Tel Aviv’s plans to build new settlements in the occupied West Bank.

The clashes erupted during the funeral of Walid al-Sharif, 23, who died of wounds sustained last month during confrontations with Israeli forces in the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Palestinian Red Crescent Ambulance Society said, in a statement, that its crews dealt with “71 injuries during confrontations with the Israeli forces in the events in Jerusalem.” The statement pointed out that “the injuries (as a result of) rubber bullets, beatings, sound bombs and suffocation, and 13 injured were taken to hospital for treatment.”

For its part, the Palestinian Prisoners Club confirmed the arrest of “more than 50 people,” while the police admitted that they had arrested “about 15 people.” And the Israeli authorities admitted that they had arrested the young Omar Abu Khdeir, nicknamed the “protector of the coffin,” the late media, Sherine Abu Aqleh, from the fall. Lawyer Khaldoun Negm explained, “The young man, Amr Abu Khdeir, was transferred to Al-Zananin (a secret file) after his arrest at dawn yesterday, Tuesday.”

On the other hand, the Elysee said in a statement on Tuesday evening that President Emmanuel Macron had spoken by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

Macron expressed his concern over recent Israeli announcements regarding the construction of new settlements in the West Bank, declaring his desire to decisively contribute to the revival of peace efforts in the Middle East. The President of France also expressed his affection for the death of journalist Sherine Abu Aqleh, and mentioned the importance Paris attaches to ending the investigation quickly.
