DOZENS of public transport (angkot) drivers from Lamawalang Terminal-Larantuka City, Larantuka District, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) staged a strike at the Sandominggo T-junction or in front of the Larantuka RSPD Studio.

As a result of this action, hundreds of passengers were stranded and had difficulty finding public transportation. Housewives and students who wanted to go back on holiday had to be transported by trucks and pick-ups to reach their homes.

These West-bound public transportation drivers are urging the regional government to immediately curb the practice of illegal levies and control of transport routes within the city which has been troubling residents of Flotim and outside Flotim for years.

Laurensius Pati Ritan, one of the angkot drivers, emphasized that this peaceful action carried out by the westbound angkot drivers was aimed at urging the East Flores Regional Government to immediately control the practice of illegal levies that occurred by unscrupulous angkot drivers at the Lamawalang terminal.

“Where for rural transportation the fee is 10 thousand rupiah per passenger, while for inter-regional passengers within the provinces of Sikka, Ende and Bajawa the fee is 20 to 50 thousand rupiah per passenger,” he said.

Laurensius admitted that the tribute recipients did not take passengers to the city terminal, but were taken directly by the vehicle they were traveling in. Both buses and rural transportation can enter the city.

In addition, he also urged the regional government to immediately regulate tariffs in the city according to the regulations that have been issued. Because so far the fare for the western region is still valid at 5 thousand rupiah per passenger for adults and 2 thousand rupiah for school children. Meanwhile, referring to the Regent’s decision, public transport fares for adults are 7 thousand rupiah and for school children 3 thousand rupiah per passenger.

With this action, he hopes that the local government will thoroughly investigate the number of public transportation in circulation and take firm action against individuals who have been practicing illegal fees at the Lamawalang terminal, so that public transportation drivers in the western region can provide services in accordance with applicable regulations.
