Dragon Age: Dreadwolf has leaked video and shows combat similar to God of War

Update (05/02/2023) – GS

In June last year, EA officially announced the title of the new game in the Dragon Age franchise and its first details. Since then, the publisher has shared little information about the project, such as a video to introduce the villain and information about gameplay in alpha phase.

This week, several leaked information about the game began to circulate on the internet, including combat previews.

An anonymous Reddit user shared the first screenshots of the game claiming they were captured by a playtester with access to an “early alpha” build.

While the user didn’t share the entire video, he did post screenshots and a description of what he allegedly saw.

  • There are about 20 minutes of gameplay involving one segment/dungeon. All gameplay takes place in Weisshaupt’s Gray Warden HQ fortress.
  • The player character is an Elven ‘Knight’ class (the character screen actually says he is a mid-level Gray Warden), and they have a sword and shield. They also have two party members, another knight and a thieving dwarf.
  • Combat is completely real-time and similar to a hack and slash. I was told that the guiding reference point was God of War (2018).
  • The player has his regular attack combo and then his abilities, as well as a special bar that allows you to do a special attack.
  • As the character was a sword and shield guy, he was able to deflect enemy attacks and follow up with counterattacks. It’s hard to tell their exact abilities, they only had two hotkeys along with a special one. But one seems to be basically a drop kick and the other a charged sword attack. I’m not exactly sure what the special attack does.

The alpha version supposedly didn’t contain the ability to command party members, but the Reddit user noted that “the most immediate thing you notice is that the animation quality has DRASTICALLY improved… we’ve never seen such good animation quality in no BioWare games.”

As it is leaked material, it is possible that it will be removed soon, but we can see that the information is true, which makes fans even more anxious.

For now, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf continues without an official release date.

Dragon Age: new game gets official title and new details

After much waiting and rumors, BioWare has finally revealed official news about the fourth game in the Dragon Age franchise.

Dubbed Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, the reveal was accompanied by the game’s logo and a special message from the team working on the game in a new post on BioWare’s blog.

Although the game will not be released this year, more news will be released by the end of 2022.

Who Dread Wolf?

Solas, the Dire Wolf. Some say he may be an ancient elven god, some say not. Others say he is a traitor to his people… or a savior who now seeks to rescue them at the cost of his own world. His motives are inscrutable and his methods sometimes questionable, earning him a reputation as something of a trickster deity—a player of dark and dangerous stakes.

Whether you’re new to Dragon Age stories or have experienced them all, using Solas’ namesake undoubtedly suggests a spectrum of endless possibilities for where things could go. But at the heart of it, as with every game before it, is you. If you’re new to Dragon Age, you don’t have to worry that you haven’t met our antagonist yet. He will properly introduce himself when the time is right, but we hinted at his return when we announced #TheDreadWolfRises in 2018.

Unfortunately, the developer did not reveal which platforms the title will be released for, but it is very likely that it will be exclusive to PS5, Xbox Series and PC, as rumors say.

Previously, the studio had already confirmed that it is halfway through the development of the game, which could mean that it will be released in late 2023.

So, looking forward to the new game?

BioWare Confirms Dragon Age 4 Is In Mid-Development

BioWare has brought exciting new information to fans about the development of Dragon Age 4 and Mass Effect 4. The update was posted on the company’s official blog.

Last year, the company scrapped Anthem Next to focus on Dragon Age 4.

In a post on his official blog, Bioware manager Gary McKay said that Dragon Age 4 is at a much more advanced level of development than Mass Effect.

As for the new Dragon Age, we’re right in the middle of its development, which is an amazing feeling. Our planning was finalized last year and now, we are focused on building our vision: creating amazing settings, deep characters, strong gameplay, impactful script, exciting cinematics and much more.”

Last week, VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb claimed that the development of Dragon Age 4 was very advanced and could be released in 2023.

Mckay also stated that fans will get more news about the game through blog posts and social media. He explains that as development progresses, there will be regular communication with players because their feedback matters to the game’s production.

He also spoke about Christian Dailey of Bioware, one of the most important figures in Bioware’s history who left the studio and the project. McKay claims he’s had a big influence on the company’s games and development team, but he’ll remain optimistic about the future. Marc Walters, Corrine Busche, and Benoit Houle are currently leading development on Dragon Age 4.

In November 2020, Bioware revealed that it was working on a new game in the Mass Effect franchise and released a teaser. In his post, McKay also spoke about the project.

The team, led by Mike Gamble, is made up of veteran developers and extremely talented new people. Everyone is actively contributing ideas and experiences. Next-gen AAA games take a long time to make, but we know fans want them to arrive as soon as possible. But our number one priority needs to be quality and that takes time to do.”

In May 2021, BioWare released Mass Effect Legendary Edition, a collection of remasters of the first three games. According to EA, it exceeded all sales expectations. You can read our review here.

Dragon Age 4 has a high chance of being released in 2023

In development since 2015, Dragon Age 4 is one of the EA-published games that fans are most eager to check out. Although little is known about the title so far, it seems that its release is getting closer.

Last year, there were rumors that the game will be exclusive to the new generation of consoles, which makes sense, considering that more and more players are joining the new platforms.

According to VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb, we’ll have exciting official news about the game soon and that development is “in great shape”.

Overall, when they look at where they should be in the development cycle, they’re hitting targets, leaving the game on schedule.

Despite this, Grubb warns that his sources indicate that the game should not be released before the second half of next year.

It’s still at least 18 months away from being released, so it’s not coming in early 2023, maybe late. That seems like the earliest you can expect.

The journalist also claims that the studio should not follow in the footsteps of Mass Effect and release a remastered Dragon Age trilogy, which could be bad news for fans.

If the information is true, EA should start marketing the game soon, finally giving us a preview of what’s to come.

Dragon Age 4 may launch on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC

The next Dragon Age is still far from being released, but a new rumor indicates which platforms players will be able to enjoy it on. According to Venture Beat, Dragon Age 4 is set to release on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, and PS5, and there are no plans for Xbox One or PS4 versions.

BioWare’s track record likely played a crucial role in this decision, as former executive producer Mark Darrah openly stated on Twitter that Dragon Age: Inquisition should have been developed for Xbox One, PS4, and PC only, admitting that the Xbox 360 versions and PS3 ended up limiting the development of the project.

The Dead Space remake, another EA title that will be released in the future and is in development at Motive Studios, is also exclusive to the current generation, indicating that more and more games from the EA Worldwide Studios family will only be available on the latest consoles.

Other rumors indicate that the upcoming Dragon Age is also reportedly a single-player adventure, doing away with multiplayer elements that were previously planned. The game also appears to be set in the Tevinter Imperium and possibly Antiva.
