This Sunday, it has been a week to the day that a dramatic merry-go-round accident occurred in La Hestre, in the Center region. Seven people were ejected from an attraction due to the sudden opening of the security barrier. We collected this Sunday information on the state of health of the victims. Some are seriously affected.
The barrier opens at the highest point
We also obtained video of the attraction at the time of the crash (see top of article). They provide a better understanding of the sequence of events. However, we chose to cut the sequence when the barrier opens so as not to expose the drama.
We are a few moments before the tragedy. The seven victims are installed in the sensational attraction called the “Rock’n’Roll”. The carousel turns slowly at first, accelerates, stops, goes back in one direction then the other… More than three minutes and thirty seconds have passed since the start of the round.As the row of seats is at the highest point, about three meters from the ground, the safety barrier opens.
The victims are propelled to the ground. One of them clings a few moments then also falls while the attraction still turns. Around the fairground profession, it is chaos. Panic seizes the spectators.
The emergency services intervene quickly. The seven injured are being cared for in different hospitals.
We can already see that the psychological shock is intense
We met a lawyer who represents the fathers of three of the victims: twins Alyssia and Anastasia, 12, and their little cousin Rose, 10. Polytraumatized, they are now out of danger, but a long rehabilitation awaits them.
“Some of these children are still hospitalized and under close surveillance.“, specifies the lawyer. “We can already see that the psychological shock is intense. They are very shocked. The dad was able to hear the girls talking about it at times, with things that are also a bit worrying and which will have to be denounced to the examining magistrate for verification.“, he adds. “They talk about it. They don’t have their usual behavior“.
There remains the last case of which we speak little
Another injured was released from the hospital, two people are still being treated in orthopedic services.
As for the seventh victim, she is still in serious condition. “For six of the victims, things are indeed progressing well. They are in orthopedic services. The ten-year-old could be transferred next week. There remains the last case which is little talked about, which is still very worrying, and for which there are very few neurological reactions. We think a lot about the family“, explained Bruno Pozzoni, the mayor of Manage.
A week after this terrible event, the attraction is still sealed in the village square. The first observations of the experts revealed that the closing system is broken. The investigation must determine if it was defective before the facts or if it gave way during the accident.
Some relatives will be civil parties next week. The municipality plans to undertake the same approach.
