Dramatic Water Rescue: Man Saved, Another Tragically Lost in Canal Incident in Ostend

2023-09-04 10:21:28

The facts occurred early Sunday evening in the part of the canal located between the Little Island and the Princess Elisabeth road in Ostend. A man’s bunch of keys has fallen into the water. Two youngsters – one aged 29, the other 21 – tried to retrieve it but the older one slipped. The youngest then tried to help his comrade but due to the strong current, they both found themselves in difficulty in the water.

Bystanders called the emergency services and managed to pull the youngest victim out of the water. She was taken to hospital in critical condition, but her condition has since improved.

The search by the maritime police and a team of firefighter divers, which lasted until 9 p.m. Sunday, did not find the other victim, swept away by the current. His lifeless body was finally discovered Monday morning around 7:30 a.m., near a platform behind the station of the seaside resort.
