Drawings open up a space for irony

Siegfried Anzinger is showing 34 current works in the Kunstraum St. Virgil.

At first glance, the scene seems quite peaceful. However, the resting beast of prey has its eyes on something that can only be guessed at beyond the picture section. Is the couple, two pairs of bare feet sticking out of the picture, seconds from catastrophe? The Austrian artist Siegfried Anzinger likes to work with stylistic devices from comics in a current series of drawings as well as with ambiguous possibilities of interpretation. 34 works by the Documenta and Biennale participant can be seen in the Salzburg art space St. Virgil since Thursday. The painter and sculptor Anzinger, who in the 1980s belonged to the group of “Neue Wilden” along with Gunter Damisch, Hubert Scheibl and Hubert Schmalix, interweaves “different worlds” in his drawings, according to the press release: sacred and profane, ironic and astute. The spectrum of works ranges from depictions of Jesus to animal scenes or weekend idylls, behind which “often humorous, playful allusions are hidden”.

Exhibition: “Siegfried Anzinger: The Sculptor as Draftsman”, Kunstraum St. Virgil, until September 8th.
