During the national costume segment of this year’s Miss Universe contest, some of the contestants chose to make political statements including Miss Ukraine, Victoria Apanasenko, who had the effect of referring to Russia’s ongoing war on her country.
Other contestants expressed political stances as they took to the stage.
Some competitors wore costumes made from recycled materials.
