The Belgian likes to have fun and party. It’s no secret. And the summer period is conducive to celebrations. Between the festivals, the various evenings organized in number or a simple barbecue, the occasions to have a small drink are numerous. But one problem still remains: driving after drinking alcohol.

The Walloon road safety agency conducted a study among many Belgians. One observation is rather clear: few Belgians manage not to drink the slightest drop of alcohol, despite having to get back behind the wheel.

However, they limit their consumption. The AWSR revealed “that 51% of drivers do not drink alcohol at all if they have to drive. This means that almost one in two Walloons (49%) consume it despite having to drive” .

Among these 49%, about 3 out of 4 admit to monitoring their consumption so as not to exceed the legal limit and one driver out of 4 reveals that they do not take the legal limit into account.

Among all respondents, 1% do not monitor their consumption at all.

22,000 breathalyzers for festival-goers

Alcohol and drugs, an explosive cocktail for the scooter rider

To help festival-goers know whether or not they are fit to get back on the road after one (or more) long day(s) of festival, the AWSR has made available to them 22,000 breathalyzers spread over around ten festivals. different.

Festival-goers who so wish can also return via the TEC buses and the TEC ON TOUR operation. Public transport sets up special shuttles to leave and join certain events.

The AWSR recalls that “a driver who takes the wheel with a blood alcohol level slightly above 0.5 grams per liter of blood is already up to 10 times more likely to have an accident”.
